Andreas m. Espegren Masvie
I am at Christ Church, Oxford, as a DPhil (doctoral) student in Theology and Religion, researching on the intersection of classics, patristics, politics – and philosophy and theology. Specifically, I inquire into ‘civic friendship’ (especially under the conditions of modernity and liberalism) in the political philosophy of Alasdair MacIntyre. And to do so, I examine the connection between politics and friendship in Plato, Aristotle, and Augustine.
More broadly, my academic interests revolve around the meaning of being human: what is it to be and become beings like us, and how can we live well? I write and speak about all things remotely related to these things.
I have come to appreciate that certain components are integral to the good life: skijoring with pointer in front and children in pulk behind, Fauré’s Requiem, the danish gambit, Rochefort 10, Maradona’s warm up in the UEFA Cup semi final in 1989, Randi, Gorgonzola pizza with pickled red onion, Barbour cord trousers and merino wool turtlenecks and Algha glasses, morning coffee with cinnamon rolls before 5am, picking wild raspberries, liturgy of the hours, bells and smells (rather lots of it) – and, of course, silence.
